PROFILE

 

University Science Instrumentation Centre , Madurai Kamaraj University was established in the year 1978 with the financial assistance from UGC, to provide various centralized instrumentation facilities for academic, research and industrial community in this region. UGC upgraded this Center to Level-III, an advanced instrumentation Center , in the year 1990. In addition to various instrumentation services, the Center offers teaching, training and research programmes in instrumentation. The Center provides the following facilities for the academic and research activities.

  • Analytical services with sophisticated analytical instruments.
  • Design, fabrication, repair and service of electronic instruments.
  • Design, fabrication and repair of glassware equipments and mechanical accessories.
  • Design & development of hardware and software for Computer Aided instrumentation applications.
  • Training in design, development and fabrication of instruments –
    • Short term courses and workshops for teachers, students, research scholars and technicians in universities, colleges and industries are organized at regular intervals.
  • Teaching and research programmes in instrumentation –
    • Two year M.Sc (Instrumentation)
    • Research projects in design and development of instruments in collaboration with other departments.
    • Part time Ph.D.

Eligibility for admission

 

Candidates those who have completed B.Sc (Physics, Applied Science,

Electronics or Computer Science) degree or any other B.Sc degree with physics

or Electronics as ancillary subject with 55% marks in Part – III are eligible for

admission.For SC/ST candidates, inimum of pass is required.

 

Admission procedure:

Candidates are admitted based on an entrance test conducted in April/May

Facilities for design and development of PC based application are available. The

Center offers guidance and facilities to B.E., B. Tech, M.Sc., M.C.A. students

to complete their end semester projects at this Center.

  • This Centre provides analytical services with the following sophisticated analytical instruments.
    • NMR Spectrometer – R32 Perkin Elmer
    • FT – IR Spectrophotometer – 8400S Shimadzu
    • UV – VIS Spectrophotometer -402 Perkin Elmer
    • Microdensitometer
    • Monochromator
  • Users: Teacher, research scholars, PG students in university departments, other educational institutions, R&D labs and industries.

Electronic services:
The Centre provides facilities for design and development of new instruments that are either not available in the market or import substitutes for specific research measurements. The Center also provides facilities for repair and service of electronic instruments.
  • All Kinds of test and measuring instruments & tools are available
  • No. of instruments repaired above: 2700, No. of new design: above 115
  • Sufficient spares are Kept in stock to avoid delay in repair.

Glassblowing and Workshop services:
The Centre provides facilities for repair and fabrication of glassware equipments, mechanical accessories/ models/assemblies etc.

Electronic / Glass Blowing / Workshop services
Charges for Electronics, Glass Blowing and Workshop services are based on service involving design, fabrication, assembling and the use of special instruments and machines. Services for the schools/Departments of Madurai Kamaraj University are rendered at subsidized rates. The service charges may be revised without prior intimation. Payment must be made by DD drawn in favour of “Registrar Madurai Kamaraj University, USIC A/C” and payable at Madurai .
 
How to avail the services
Users may submit the service request form clearly indicating the service required along with the samples for analytical services, the instruments for repairing or specifications for new design and fabrication. For repairing the electronic instruments all necessary manuals should also be submitted along with the instruments.
