Department of Environmental Remote Sensing and Cartography
Department Profile:
The Department of Environmental Remote Sensing and Cartography was established in the year 1996. The Department has been specializing in the field of Cartography, Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Geographic Information System, Global Positioning System and their application in various disciplines. The Department has contributed significantly to the field of Geo-informatics. It has produced 14 batches with more than 130 students. The Department has a well-equipped RS & GIS Lab and a library of more than 1000 books in the relevant discipline. The Smart Class rooms with state of art facilities are used for classroom teaching. The Department has carried out a few research projects and are funded by University Grants Commission and other agencies. Since the M.Sc. course offered by the department is focused on the current developing science, UGC has assisted with Rs. 37.25 lakhs and one faculty under UGC Innovative Programme. Based on the significant contributions made by the Department and the School, UGC has recognized it as a Department of Research Support (DRS) under its Special Assistance Programme (SAP). Currently, a project funded by UGC-UPE scheme has been under taken with five focal themes. The Department has organized more than 5 National Seminars. The Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members frequently attend various conferences and present their Research papers which were recognized by the fellow academicians and researchers. To its credit, they have published more than 25 research articles in peer reviewed International and National journals in the last five years. The Department has also been involved in extension activities for a near by village and consultancy services for few agencies. An EDUSAT based distance learning programme on Basics of Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS is being conduced twice a year in collaboration with the EMMRC-MKU, UGC-CEC, New Delhi and Indian Institute of Remote Sensing(IIRS), Dehradun. The participants can interact online with the faculties of IIRS, the pioneers in Remote Sensing Technology to enhance their understanding in the field. A National Level Talent Test is conducted annually for the students and an Award is offered to the outstanding students in collaboration with The Indian Geographical Society, Chennai. The alumni of the Department work in various Government Organizations like Survey of India, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Anna University etc, Private Engineering Colleges, IT Industries and various Private Organizations.
