| SC / ST Cell |
|
An SC/ST Cell was created and it started functioning in the Madurai Kamaraj University from 23.11.1985.It was further strengthened with its full complement of staff members as actioned by the University Grants Commission on the basis of cent per cent grant from the University Grants Commission from 1.04.1988. From its inception the SC/ST Cell is engaged in various activities to strengthen the machinery for monitoring,evaluation and planning of the policies and programmes of the Govt. of India, the Govt. of TamilNadu and the University Grants Commission for providing facilities to SCs/STs.
A Standing Committee has been constitued with the Vice-Chancellor as its Chairman giving due representation to SCs/STs as per the guide lines of the instructed by the University Grants Commission. Principals of all colleges were requested to institute a similar mechanism at the college level where committee under the Chairmanship of the Principal could monitor the implementation of such programmes/policies. The SC/ST Cell in the Madurai Kamaraj University responses to all the letters received from the Govt. of India,Govt. of TamilNadu and the University Grants Commission regarding grievances of SC/ST students and suitable action is taken to rectify them. The cell is monitoring the admission of SC/ST students not only in the University Departments but also in its affiliated colleges. At present the SC/ST Cell in University is functioning with one Deputy Registrar and supporting staff.

| Kidney and Bone Marrow Transplantation Matching Service Facility |
| A HLA Laboratory was established at the Department of Immunology, School of Biological Sciences. Indian Council of Medical Research recognised the centre for HLA Programme in India. The tissue-typing laboratory has so far offered transplantation Matching services for 753 renal failure patients and their potential donors and 25 number of bone marrow transplantation.Many Scientists from all over India have been trained for transplantation Matching Service. The department has also given the technical how to establish a tissue-typing laboratory at the TamilNadu Hospital, Madras under Industry Consultancy Services. |
| Industrial Consultancy |
For effective University-industries interaction, the University has constitued an Industrial Consultancy Group (ICG) with the Vice-Chancellor as Chairman, with an industrialist, a Bank Executive and a Scientist as members and a scientist as the Secretary. At present Prof. C.Srinivasan, Professor of Materials Science is serving as the Member Secretary. The Secretary acts as the nodal person for providing consultancy and interaction. He identifies the suitable faculty, School or Department for the service required by the industries. A Directory of Scientists and Technologists of the University with their areas of specialisation and consultancy capabilities has been prepared and distributed.
This group has offered consultancy services to many industries and organizations such as SPIC, TamilNadu Housing Board, Kothari Sugars, Parry Agro Industries, Hindustan CIBA-GEIGY, and many others to tackle specific requirements or problems they encountered. This group receives financial support from the TamilNadu State Council of Science and Technology. |
| Engineering Department |
| The University has an Engineering Department,which takes care of the maintenance of the buildings and electrical equipments,garden, water supply etc. The department also looks after the upkeep of the entire campus including watch and ward. |
| National Service Scheme (NSS): |
The Nss launched on the 24 th Sep 1969 as a Mahatma Gandhi Centenary year Programme in the country with the objective of arousing social conscience of students undergoing instruction in Universities/Colleges and to provide them an opportunity to work with the people in the villages/slums with a view to bring about a change in their social preception. The NSS introduced in Madurai Kamaraj UNiversity in ten selected colleges during '69-70 as a scheme has become a permanent programme with Over 90 colleges participating in it with over 20,200 of thier volunteers getting voluntarily associated with this programme during 2002-2003.
The voluteers enrolled are involved in two types of activities : |

Regular/concurrent activity where volunteers work for 120 hours per year and remain in NSS for 2 years. |

2.
|
Special Camping Programme where 50% of volunteers enrolled, camp in the adopted village for 10 days,organising need based development programmes and projects for the batterment of the community. |

| Regular Activities: |
Under Concurrent programmes volunteers are involed in a variety of activities ranging from Blood donation ,Traffic Education & Regulation, work in hospitals,Drugs and AIDS awareness,Remedial Education, in Urban Areas, to Adult Literacy, Mother and Child Care, Gender Justice, Small Savings,Construction of link roads, Prevention of monuments, and Rain Harvesting in rural areas.
Volunteers also get associated with institutions run by NGOs mostly to provide relief and rehabilitation to the children in Orphanages, Homes for Mentally Retarded,Aged in old age homes and physically and visually. Training and Orientation courses on Leadership, Consumer and Human rights, HIV / AIDS, Career Guidence, Social and Religious Harmony and street theatre methods of communication are organised to foster among the volunteers the qualities of leadership, respect for values enshrined in the constitution, Co-OPerative team work, and an appreciation of our cultural heritage. |
| Adult, Continuing Education and Extension : |

The Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, Madurai Kamaraj University,Madurai was established in May 1979, under the guidelines of the UGC and the grants received upto 31-03-1997, the Department has been involved in programmes such as literacy, Post Literacy, Continuing Education Planning Forum, Population Education and related activities and services. More than a hundred Universities are involved in the nation-wide Programme of Extension, which is the Third Dimension, equal in the status to teaching and research. The Expenditure involved for the scheme was funded by the UGC until 31-03-1997.
The UGC has very aptly assigned the Nodal University status to the Madurai Kamaraj University. The Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, has been permitted to monitor and review the acadamic initiatives of excellence of other Universities and the Extensions in Tamil Nadu and Pondichery.

| Youth Welfare: |
| This Department was established in 1973. The activities of the department are health care including AIDS awareness and Drug Abuse Prevention, Career Guidence and Counselling. Coaching for Civil Service Examinations , Self-Employement Training Programme, Personality Development and Leadership. At present steps are being initiated to seek placement for students in various fields of employement and to offer training for self-employment. |
| Coaching for Competitive Examination: |
| The Department of Youth Welfare offers a full time one year coaching for IAS / IPS Preliminary and Main Examinations from January to December. The coaching is financially supported by the Govt. of Tamilnadu. The Govt. has sanctioned a strength of 75 students for free coaching with a monthly stipend of Rs.250 for eight months. Coaching classes are conducted six days a week. |
