The Department of Sociology was established in the year 1977 with 3 Faculty members. Subsequently the Department has been strengthened and it has 7 Faculty members. The Department has been specializing in the field of Mass Communication, Rural Development, Population Studies, Political Sociology, Sociology of Leisure etc. The Department had contributed significantly to the fields of Social stratification, Medical Sociology, Mass Communication. It has produced 25 Ph. D's in various fields, more than 50 M. Phil 's and more than 350 M. A. students. The Faculty members have published 15 Books (National and International) and published more than 5000 Research Papers. The Department has a well-equipped library and has audio visual equipments, computers etc. which are used for classroom teaching. The Department has carried out 20 research projects (approved) which were/are funded both by National and International Agencies. |

Based on the significant contribution made by the Department, the UGC has recognized the Department of Sociology as a Department of Research Support under its Special Assistance Programme with a fund of Rs. 32 lakhs for a period of 5 years. |

The Department has organized more than 5 seminars (Regional and National). The faculty members have attended more than 200 seminars (National and International) and presented Research papers which were recognized by the fellow academicians and researchers. The Department has also been involved in extension activities and consultancy services. |
