| The department of English Language Studies
started functioning as a separate branch of the department
of English and comparative Literature in the year 1989. |
| |
|
| From 1999 onwards the
department follows the CBCS pattern. Under this scheme the
department offers 12 core papers with 5 credits to 9 papers
and 4 credits to 3 papers and 3 credits to 1 paper. It also
offers 3 Elective papers with 4 credits each. |

| Many of the meritorious
past students have got jobs in varied fields such as publishing
companies (Mac Milan, for example), News Paper firms, Polytechnic
and Engineering colleges. Higher Secondary Schools and so
on. They have wider opportunities abroad. one student has
won the most prestigious Hornby Scholarship and studied
in Reading University, London. Two of the students, (one
in Maldives, another in Ethiopia) are working as teachers
abroad. |

| For teaching purposes
the electronic equipments such as the Overhead projector,
Television and video record player, Two-in-one audio system
and computer are used. There is a department library fulfilling
the needs of the students and scholars. |

The department has produced books entitled
TEACHING COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH. ENGLISH PHONETICS, APPLYING
SOCIO LINGUISTIC THEORIES TO LANGUAGE TEACHING and the journal
titled Journal of English Language Studies Association (JELSA)
for private circulation among the students, scholars, and
staff of the department. At present a team of scholars and
students under the guidance of the teacher are preparing a
text with the title RHETORIC : MADE EASY and ELT METHODOLOGY
: A SURVEY.
