Profile
School of Chemistry comprises four departments - Organic, Inorganic, Physical and Natural Products. Having a humble beginning as the Department of Chemistry in 1966, it has bloomed into a full-fledged School later with a faculty of 20 endowed with a rich teaching and research expertise in diverse frontier areas such as synthesis of novel molecules, bioinorganic mimics, biomolecules from natural sources, screening for important bioproperties such as anticancer, molecular modeling, EPR imaging, photo processes, molecular recognition studies, development of novel reagents and reactions, etc. Such a unique blend of diverse expertise of faculty in different research areas renders the School a prestigious one in Madurai Kamaraj University, which provides an excellent opportunity to students who come out creditably successful in Competitive exams such as UGC/CSIR and GATE. Students are getting placed in leading companies through campus interview.

This School provides a Choice Based Credit system for its M.SC. Course rendering flexibility to the curriculums to suit the individual needs of the students. It has a student strength of 24 per year in M.Sc, and 20 per annum in M.Phil. Currently, around 100 research scholars are performing research work for their Ph.D. on full and part time basis. The students qualifying in its various courses are highly placed in teaching and research positions and in industries both in India and abroad. The School has to its credit more than 200 publications in reputed international and national journals in the last five years. Based on the above impressive performance in the teaching and research programmes, the School has been accorded the UGC-DRS (PhaseII) programme, the first phase of which is over and has applied for. Our School is also a recipient of funds for infrastructures development under DST-FIST programme. Our School has also been provided funds from DST-IRHPA programme for a 300 MHz High Resolution NMR instrument that was installed a few year back Recently Dept of material science s attached to this school for administrative purposes alone..

Department of Materials Science

Profile

The Department of Materials Science is the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu Universities. Inaugurated on 9the May, 1988, the Department commenced the academic activities immediately by introducing M. Phil. courses from the academic year 1988-89. This is an interdisciplinary course in which candidates with M.Sc. in Chemistry or Physics or Materials Science or Applied Sciences are admitted. It is attached to the Scholl of Chemistry for administrative purposes.

The Department has done substantial research work in the last fourteen years with a major thrust of published work on (i) photochemical reactions of organic molecules encapsulated in cyclodextrins, clays and zeolite cavities, organic redox reactions on irradiated semiconductor surfaces, photosensitized electron transfer reactions of metal complexes with energy (ii) Conducting polymers and their applications (iii) Synthesis of new materials (iv) Some aspects of quantum well, quantum dot and (v) Theoretical aspects of High Tc superconductors. These research topics are highly interdisciplinary and the Dept. has active collaboration with the School of Physics, School of Chemistry and USIC at Madurai Kamaraj University and as well with the CSIR and DST have been undertaken and more than eighty papers were published on the above topics. 15 candidates have got their Ph. D. degrees. The staffs also have good research collaboration with international institutes like Osaka University in Japan, University of Leicester in England, Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico in USA, Max-Planck Institute at Mulheim in Germany and Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica at Taipei in Taiwan. The Department has organized four National Seminars during the past fourteen years.
