| Profile |
The systems view, holistic approach, alternative solutions and prospective planning are the priority areas for desiring a future and designing the same. Future Studies is an innovative and interdisciplinary programme much needed for the present society. With this background, the centre for Future Studies was initiated at Madurai Kamaraj University with the support of UGC in 1990 and Tamil Nadu Government has granted its concurrence to support the Department from April 1994. The Senate of Madurai Kamaraj University has passed a resolution to upgrade the Centre for Future Studies as the Department of Future Studies. |

Library : The Department is housed in a separate building and has a Library, which is equipped with over 1500 books, about 150 Reports of various International Futures Organizations like Forecasting and Assessment in Science and Technology (FAST), UNESCO etc., |

Software : Future methodologies, ARC/INFO etc., are available. |
| |
Academic Programmes : Around 50 students have been trained under M. Phil programme. Six students had finished their Ph. D and two are working for their Ph. D. A proposal to conduct a Masters Degree programme in Future Studies has been submitted to UGC. |

Publications & Seminars : 3 books/ proceedings and 25 research papers have been published and 30 papers have been presented in seminars and conferences. The Department has conducted 40 seminars/ workshops in a span of 10 years towards creating awareness and to evolve interaction in this transdisciplinary field. |

Networking : The Department has evolved an active network of experts (national & international). The faculty are members of SASEANEE (South and South East Asia Network on Environmental Education) & WFSF (World Futures Studies Federation). Experts from different countries and from different parts of the country are interacting with our Department like Dr. Kathleen Rundal, WFSF, Queensland University, Australia; Dr. Alessandro Toccolini and Dr. Angileri from Institute of Agricultural Engineering, University of Milan, Italy visited our Centre for interactions and to discuss on possible collaborative research programmes with our Department. The Department has evolved collaboration with Mr. Jerome C. Glenn, Theodore J. Gorden and the node chairs of various countries of Millennium project of United Nations University co-ordinated by the American Council. |

Spatial Analysis Lab : Department of Future Studies has been engaged in Spatial Planning and Data Modeling in advanced fields ranging from the studies on Environmental Pollution, Agricultural Productivity, Water Management to Land Use Planning and spatial Decision support system (SDSS) at micro level by employing GIS as a prime tool. Apart from processing existing spatial and non-spatial data through GIS, Remote Sensing Data (IRS-Series) interpretation through Digital Image Processing (DIP) and GPS data capturing are also employed to have an up to date status on various natural resources. |

Joint Endeavor - Unique Opportunity |

a. International : The Department has been selected as one of the 15 sites of the world by WFSF to participate in Global Visions Project. The Department has been invited by University of Hawaii to participate in UNESCO project A-P Futures - A Network of teachers of Futures Studies in Institutions of Higher Education in the Asia Pacific Basic Region. The Department is representing the India Node for the Millennium Project of the United Nations University, coordinated by the American Council, USA, since 1997.

b. National : The Department has organized Futures Visioning Exercises and Panel Discussions with several institutions - Anna University, Bharathidasan University, Pondicherry University, Gandhigram University and several colleges like American college. |

c. Extension Programmes: The Department has conducted a number of Futures Workshops. About 700 students had been trained; 250 teachers has been trained in Environmental Education Futures. |
